In the Williamsburg/James City County area, the Heritage Humane Society is the lead agency that provides animal sheltering services in and around Williamsburg.
The mission of Heritage Humane Society, Inc. is to provide for the care of injured, stray, or unwanted companion animals of the city of Williamsburg, James City County, and the First District of York County, Virginia, so that a standard of care reflecting the values of the community can be achieved.
The Heritage Humane Society has many public events during the year and has a new dog park right next to their shelter.
The Heritage Humane Society also has dogs, cats and other types of animals available for adoption at reasonable fees.
What to do for a Lost or Found Pet
If you have lost or happen to find a lost/stray/abandoned pet in the Williamsburg/James City County area, please use these links to inform area Animal Control agencies and the Heritage Humane Society. If you have lost your pet, simply making a report does not mean that you should not continue your search. Please visit Animal Control and other area shelters on a regular basis. Remember, Virginia law requires an animal turned in or recovered
by Animal Control be help for only five days if there is no type of identification such as a collar, and only ten days if the animal has a collar. Your lost pet is counting on you! If you have lost your pet, visit your local animal shelters often.
