The Middle Peninsula area of Hampton Roads is served by the Gloucester/Matthews Humane Society as well as Gloucester Animal Control.
Gloucester Animal Control is charged with enforcing animal welfare laws, investigating animal related crimes and picking up lost or stray animals
within the Gloucester area.
The Gloucester/Matthews Humane Society is the only Humane Society in a seven-country area and takes in over 4000 animals
each year.
Both Gloucester Animal Control and the Gloucester/Matthews Humane Society have shelters with pets available for adoption. If you have lost or
found an animal in the middle peninsula area of Hampton Roads, these are the two shelters you should visit first.
What To Do For a Lost or Found Pet
If you have lost or happen to find a lost/stray/abandoned pet in the Gloucester/Matthews County area, please use these links to inform area Animal Control agencies and the Heritage Humane Society.
If you have lost your pet, simply making a report does not mean that you should not continue your search.
Please visit Animal Control and other area shelters on a regular basis.
Remember, Virginia law requires an animal turned in or recovered
by Animal Control be help for only five days if there is no type of identification such as a collar, and only ten days if the animal has a collar.
